COSMA - Update 1

In the meantime I named the robot astronaut Cosma, a maiden name, ancient Greek for Cosmos. Below you'll find a more specific design study. I think I will 3-D print the main body and the head. I've furthermore tested a FSR (force sensing resistor) as a kind of pain receptor and the ArduEye.

new project: solar rover based on Picaxe 18X

the idea is to use a picaxe 18X as a brain for a little solar rover.

i have discovered that a picaxe can function as a solar angine because it works down to 2.5 volt

so im planning to use a solarbotic 33x37 policristalline cell wich provide 6.3V - 30ma

picaxe remain in nap mode untill caps reach a voltage near to 3.5 v then activate motors to accomplish an action loop....

and so on....

i use a 74ac240 as motor drivers and geared pager motors ...

 

by the test i have done till now it seems all can work properly....

 

Reading Words off Pages and Walls using OCR, Start of Indoor Localization

Today my robot read its first words with its own eyes!  from around 8ft away!

Got Tesseract OCR going on the bot.  Its reading words close up and from distance with large fonts.  This will be the start of my indoor localization system.  Bot will be able to determine what room it is in and where it is within the room to some degree, by remembering what is written where in the house and using it as landmarks for knowing its position, with a little geometry.

I'll post some video of this in action as soon as its polished.

Code Post - Interfacing Arduino and Python

This is something I've done by hand at least ten times and always seem to lose it so I've decided to post it here. It is an easy way to debug and test stuff will developing software for the Arduino (or any Microcontroller really). There is a python code that sends string messages to the arduino over serial based on which arrow key on your keyboard is pressed. There is also an Arduino code that listens for these messages, then repeats the message back to the PC to make sure it went through.

WiFi - how can I talk to my bot with it?

I don't know much about networks and communications but most laptops and routers these days are wireless. Can we use this to interface with our bots?

A quick google on WiFi protocol told me that it is technically referred to as the 802.11 protocol.

The Xbee transceivers can also form a wireless network using the 802.15.4 protocol.
