Yes – I agree. They are from a car central locking kit. I’ve used them to make a trigger mechanism.

But…. The real purpose of this post is to tell OddBot that he’s made me and (I’m certain) other older Australian LMR members nostalgic and sad by posting a photo of components from Dick Smith Electronics. They were an iconic Australian brand – Sadly no longer with us stocking components. RIP.

Yes I miss them too. When I was 12 (1982) I saw my first Dick Smith store and it was like I had been struck by lightning. I immediately had to go inside and I've been hooked on electronics ever since.

I had one of those before. They are the actuators from a car central locking kit. They are just a small gearbox with a rack and pinion output. They are splash proof and reasonably strong. Combined with a linear pot like the one in the photo they can make a good linear servo.

I gave one away as part of a prize pack when I moved to China. I think Gareth won this pack.
