And yes.... have ayone ordered things from sparkfun with the 8 or $9 shipping charges. They say its not trackable and not assured. But............ is it fine????

on $orders less than $50us I've done the non track shipping just cause I don't want to spend the extra. I don't recall it taking longer than a week to get to me.

well yes....

i will only have one LED with about 240ohm resistor.

i will be using picaxe 28x1 starter board.

you need a resistor in series or else the LED will blow, not glow! (http://letsmakerobots.com/node/4948) I think a lower voltage is suggested but for me 6V works. As for the jumper cable, it depends what you are using...how can i know? Are you using the picaxe starter board?
I can vouch for the pixaxe 08m's being 6v tolerent. I've run several of mine using 4 1.5v akaline cells without issue. You can use a diode if you wanted to though tho reduce the voltage by 0.6v. They should be easy to come by.
