Trata II - The destruction! (Thanks Jip!)
Update: Thank you for asking me to make a jump with this, jip. Now both Trata and my camera are broke. (Last video) - But hey - Snow is melting, who needs Trata any more? Time to rebuild!
PS: Jumps with things that are driven on a high placed force makes ugly jumps!
******
I just wanted to play some with the original Trata, that I made the other day in 2 hours. I picked up some materials, and oops, I made a Trata II instead :)
I tested it in the evening, on hard snow, and it was very fast and fun! In winter time we don't get a lot of day/sunshine-time, so it is always a quest to find time to shoot video when it's not too dark (like on Trata I)
Next day / today, I was going to shoot a good video.. but we got like 30 CM of loose powder snow! And it is not made for that, it just falls through and get burried.
So there is only a pre-video for now, I have to wait for the weather to change, or the snow to settle a little..
Theory is this:
Below is shown where the point of gravity is. It is supposed to be way back. I want it to allmost stall / have the front very light, so it can take the roughher snow, and lift itself up.

If this should be too much, I have placed some sticks at the back to prevent it to flip completely over, and let the propeller hit the snow.

(Yes, the propeller is broka enyway on the pictures :) It was a late night test run, and happened because the servo fell off. Not enough hot glue! (And too few wirestrips)
Now, IF it should not lift itself over some pile of snow, I do not want elsectronics to dive in, so this upside-down deck was placed in the middle, as a "sledge".

Amazing! I've got a crashed
Amazing! I've got a crashed RC plane in the closet, along with an old RC car I don't use anymore (remember Herpe?). So many parts I can harvest. Why did it never occur to me to build something fun with them?
Sadly, we don't get nearly as much snow as you do -- we did get about 6" last week, and that stuck around for a few days, but it finally all finished melting a few days ago. I missed my chance!
But I really like the "slide around rather than roll" approach. I live near a lake -- maybe I'll make an airboat, more like Trata 1. I guess that means I'll also have to make a full-size boat, so I can go get the R/C boat when it flips over or the battery runs out :)

Or you could go out and buy
Or you could go out and buy some new swimming kit instead of a full sized boat ;) I used mine a lot.....
Biggest problem with most boats is that they dont really like water. Engines and controllers need to be pretty big (they draw quite some amps) or you'll burn out lot's of $$$ :( (or you can just go really slow...... but looking at the Trata that's not the funniest option)
If it's to cold you could always use the good old fishingrod with a tennisball instead of a hook...... (make a little hook to grap on your boat)
Here's a little boat I build from balsa, a hydroplane, probably the closest you will get if you want to be "above" the water :) It does about 50km an hour with a standard car engine (540 size, 13 turns).
@ Thu, 2010-02-11 21:28
That's pretty badass. Yeah,
That's pretty badass. Yeah, as I'm playing around with the boat idea some more, I'm starting to wonder about waterproofing. Maybe just sticking everything inside one or two ziplock bags will be good enough -- I'm hoping not to have to put TOO much effort into this :) Do you not have a problem, with your motor exposed on the top like that?

So far it did alright except
So far it did alright except for one time when I flipped it over, then again if you want to build a boat for sailing don't go this way. Better to make it watertight as much as possible. The one time I did flip it over I just sat it close to the heater, all worked again after a day of propr drying (and rinsing it with clean water first).
I still have most of the building pictures. Will put them up here some day soon. Pretty long build......

There's definetly potential in boats!
And some choises to be made; sailing in or on wather.. Let's see what you come up with, I guess I will have to make a boat myself! (When the ice melts)
@ Thu, 2010-02-11 15:37
My wife bought our son one
My wife bought our son one of these boats for Christmas. It's been too cold to try it out yet, but I immediately thought about hacking it with some intelligence.
However, these boats are pretty fast. I wonder what sort of sensors I'd need to keep the robot ahead of the changing environment.
Or I just need to wait for my son to crash it really bad so I can get to the parts. ; j

No clue about robots yet but first problem I would think about is how to stop the damn thing :) An anchor doesnt really work on a small boat :)

Increase the angle
Hi Fritsl,
I have been playing arround with prop driven vehicles a little, next one try and make the prop lean backward (from a side view) about 20 degrees. You'll be pleased with the power increase ;)
Greetz, DutchBot
@ Mon, 2010-02-08 23:44
Does this power increase
@ Tue, 2010-02-09 09:01
Yes but it also directs
Yes but it also directs the propwash downwards to the "solid" floor oposite to aiming it straight into a "fluid" sky. This allows for little more presure to build up resulting in more forward momentum.

I sometimes wondered if that was the case!

Helicopters can use a trick
Helicopters can use a trick similar to this, it's referred to as the 'ground effect' - although there are actually several 'ground effects' that influence aircraft =)

I don't know if there is already a page with the answer to this question, but how did you get the bot to work with you r/c remote?
Also, those are some bona fied knitting needles!

This is NOT a "robot"
This is NOT a "robot" - it is posted as "Something else".
If you click the link to more info in the post, you will find the first version of this, and the explanation:
I had an old RC car. I took out the electronics, and put it together like this, with a propellar.
It is essentially the same RC car, I just took away the wheels and chassis, and added some new stuff, like a propellar.
This is just a very simple thing, for fun. Take your old RC, rip the electronics, and put it in use for something else fun, that is what it is about :)

2 big knitting needles that
2 big knitting needles that my wife did not use any more.
Some old plastic tube, some metal wire, and some sticks and wirestrippers.
Top it up with the guts from a crashed RC car (Remote, Servo, Motor controller and motor) - and add a propellar, bought in a small local hobby store.

You know - womens magazines - "You should try this really nice thing".. she tried, and I got the sticks :D
However, as written somewhere else, I have seen these in knit-hobby-stores (that I of course visit all the time :D) - they should be easy to get hands on.
@ Sun, 2010-02-07 11:46
$4... hmmm...
Hi Frits,
Cool thing you made but it hardly only costs $4 to build since I would suspect an LM406FB speed regulator and an R/C receiver wrapped in the plastic and plus the racing pack, servo and what appears to be a 540 sized motor. If you don't count all the stuff used to build it the price info is kind of worthless for others :-).
Would be cool to see some videos of it doing some stunt jumps or something like that. Build some snow ramps!

@ Sun, 2010-02-07 16:47
Thank you for provoking me!
Now I have a video camera without sound, because it got snow in it.
And a completely destroyed Trata II!
Final video shows parts of this destruction :)
Now I dare youto make a ramp for Tiny Tim!
@ Sun, 2010-02-14 15:02
Sounds like a fun idea!
Hey I can't help that you are a bad driver :-).
I will let Tiny Tim do some jumping soon then... Hopefully I will be able to steer a little better than you, hehe. RIP Trata II.

Well, I used a crashed car.
Well, I used a crashed car. I only boght the propellar, that's the USD 4.
My idea was to show some fun that one can have when an RC is broke - that was my project anyway; I have several crashed RC cars, but everythiong but the car itself is in fine conditon. I even got some from others, so the poarts are free for me. Excecpt for the propeller.
It's quite hard to shoot videos, because I use 2 hands to control the thing. Also I dont know if this would do well on ramps, I didn't build it for anything but what is shown on the video :)

Yer, brushless and lipo! Me want also!
I just changed the weight on it to more front, and of course again there is hard snow tonight.. Now it is so fast that I cannot test it in my own garden, because there is no breaks, and it just continues :)
Must get up early tomorrow and see if I can catch some sun while snow is still hard, on a large field, so I can show you the real Trata-fun! :)

Politics sux in every country, what makes you think your new prime minister is better at being worse? :p
@ Sun, 2010-01-31 23:20
looks like fun
would it work on water as well? like does it float?
I guess you'll have to wait for spring to find out. Good thing they got that global warming conference out of the way before all the snow this year hey? lol.

I am very sure this one will
I am very sure this one will not float. Not as it is, however, but build can be rebuild :)
The first one can sail, I am sure!
Yes, it's ironic that Denmark should host a world wide climate conference, and completely make a mess out of it.. and get the hardest winther in many, many years :D
PS: Sorry about our prime minister, and the mess he made of the planet. He is not the one we elected, the real one got another jo as head of NATO, and then he just left us all the sudden, with this little fat and inkompetent guy as replacement! Quite unfortunate, if I may say so.
