LMR-III Now Online!

Rudolph's picture

As you can see, LMR is back up and now at version 3!

No, your eyes did not deceive you, that was Zanthess' avatar you saw everywhere. This release includes a new attempt at thwarting spammers by adding a small quiz to the user registration form. Since this was Zanthess' idea the avatars where temporary and in her honor.

Also new for this release is some cleanup of the various post functions. You may notice the reply/edit/collect/subscribe/etc... links are seemingly missing. Well, they're not ;) Hover your mouse over the title of the post (or comment) and a box will drop down containing those links. No more searching about the page to find the Collect link! If you are unable to see the little blue arrow to the left of a post's title, please press and hold your [Shift] key and click the Reload button in your browser to fetch the new Javascript files.

Another big thing is the LMR Chillout Zone. If/when you see something really cool that you think the rest of LMR needs to see, click the "Send to Chillout Zone" link for that post (node, comment, and/or video). Each registered LMR user gets their own Chillout Zone (affectionately called "CoZ") that only contains Chills you've not yet read. For a more detailed explanation please see the CoZ About page.

As always, if you spot anything that appears out of whack please hit my Contact page and let me know.

Edit = As always I forgot to mention some things. You'll also notice that the "Watch on ProviderX" links are missing below embedded videos. In the effort to clean up links (via the aforementioned title dropdowns) the Watch On links were made a bit more dynamic. If you need those links, hit your user page, click the Edit tab, and scroll down to Site Preferences. Check the "Show direct link..." checkbox and save, then the links will be back.

The other thing (yeah, right, only one other) I forgot to mention is that the WYSIWYG editor has been updated as well. You'll notice a few new options for formatting in the toolbar, but the really cool thing is that it now works with WebKit browsers. That means that the image and link popups should finally work correctly in Safari and Chrome.

all my comments are appearing in reverse chronological order and i cant change it. the thingie to do it was always at the bottom of the page.

I did it!

Just now.

Reason was that I could see that many where using the "Post new comment" instead of replying to comments as they wanted to. And if your comments where shown by oldest first, and then that "Post new comment" at the bottom, it was only reasonable to make this mistake, because we made everything into dropdowns.

So now newest is at top, and in order to enforce this to everyone, I had to remove the option of deciding it yourself.

Flame me hard if I am to change it back :)

Oh shut up, you got your controls back!

In the top! I had to change something! Now flame me for that if you have the time!

:D

Somebody hose Frits down, I don't want my brand new LMR smelling like "Flame Grilled Frits"

Perfection! The world makes sense again... or at least LMR does.

Comments are in order, life is smiling and my mind is in peace.

Thanks :-)

Sorry BUT I hate it! We should have the option to choose. When reading a thread, it should be in chronological order from oldest to newest UNLESS we, the user chooses to have it otherwise.

Secondly, This reverse order just screwed up DuchBot's robot page http://letsmakerobots.com/node/16613 because the building progress was done with comments. Now the build is backward. You have to go to the last page and read in reverse to watch the progress of the build.

Third, All oter sites use the oldest first approach so a newbee to the site will be VERY confused until they figure it out [if they ever figure it out before they give up and go elsewhere].

You asked for flaming. So here it comes: Change it back as it was! Reverse order is making my brains hurt :-)

Right after LMR-III was online I read quite a few posts and I just thought there's still something to do with comments as they seemed to be all mixed up. It took me some time before I figured out they were in reverse order.

Now, after a couple of days I still find it very annoying. More often than not I don't read latest comments at all even though I open all unread posts to new tabs for checking them out. In LMR-II it was so easy to check latest comments: Just open up all unread posts to new tabs and in every tab just click end and there you have it. Now I have to scroll down until I comments start (or end in reverse order) or scroll up from the bottom. Also, as replies to comments are in forward chronological order (like this one compared to your post that I replied to) but "sibling replies" (like tom_jones' and rik's comments below) are in reverse order, it all feels a bit mixed up.

So the bottom line about comment ordering is: In my opinion reverse chronological order does not suit comments or discussion forums in general. Please change it back as it was or make it selectable in user's site preferences. Thank you.

Another note about posting: the "reply" link feels a kind of hidden in the pop-up (also dangerously close to "report spam"). I'm just thinking that now "Post new comment" is even more easier to use than reply because you can just start writing "without having to find your way to reply link". May be the "reply" link could be show after each comment/post as it was before and post a new comment "hidden behind" a "Post new comment" link if you want to have more people using reply instead of new comment. Of course the down side for that is that people may find it too hard to post new comments and not post at all.

Just my 2 cents

id like the choice of how the page was laid out.
if the default was reverse chronological i think most would just stick to it

It's not a glitch then. Good idea too. I "hate" it when people don't reply in-thread.
