Dutchbot PICAXE
Yes yes, after all the parallax troubles so far and waiting for their answer I decided to go PICAXE for a new small project. Got the start here stuff and spent today collecting parts from old hardware (such as HD's and printers). Now all I need is and idea. Got 8 steppenmotors, a solenoid and some other scrap.
But whats cool? I really love the design of some other LMR dude (robot that looks like 3 pebbles)........ Then again I have 8 steppenmotors (small ones)..... Don't know yet, design or laughs.......

Nice one, I got news from
Nice one, I got news from the active-robot guys. They offered half the money back so my mrs1 is on the way to holland. Bit of a bummer since it looks like the board was faulty. Then again it's electronics to be messed with so I can understand their reaction.

Hi Oddbot, I think we
Hi Oddbot, I think we already found out these are little brushless motors. http://letsmakerobots.com/node/21861

In that case
Have you considered making a gyroscope out of a motor with the platter still fitted to it? They can reach quite high speeds so they would make good gyros.
Because you can control their speed precisely they are also good for laser scanners eg. barcode readers.

A gyro as in a rotational
A gyro as in a rotational stability device? Do you have an example of how that's used?
This does make me think about exchanging the plate for a propellor and have a 2 wheeled bot. With just enough propellor power to keep the bot straight. Like that old movie you had with a small boy with a propellor on his hat/head.

Balancing
The propellar would not work since the spindle motor is not powerful enough. I am talking about an electronic spinning top known as a gyroscope. I have never seen one used in a robot but certainly it could be used for balancing a robot on one wheel or ball.
I'm not sure about two wheeled robots as spinning tops tend to tilt slowly in all directions and two wheels would fight that action on one axis.

That's quite a challenging
That's quite a challenging build with all the things rotating arround eachother. A small prop (like the gunther prop) might do the job though. To much idea's to little time. Now where's that guy that invented work and bosses. I need to speak to him.

You said you have 8 stepper
You said you have 8 stepper motors. Are they big or small? Will they drive directly from the picaxe (very small) or do they need a driver IC like the l293D?
Post some photos of the parts to help us help you :-)
