Make Your Own PICAXE USB Program Cable
August 23, 2011
I was just wondering if anyone else has made their own PICAXE program transfer cable?
I had all the equipment to make one, 2.5mm stereo jack, colour coded wire, a usb plug and soldering equipment; so I thought i'd give it a go!
The connections for the PICAXE cable seemed very simple (having only Serial in, Serial Out and Ground) and knowing that a usb's connections were quite similar (Ground, Data+, Data- and Vcc) so I tried to match them up.
I connected the two grounds on the two different plugs, connected Serial Out on the jack to Data- on the USB and finally the Jack's Serial in to Data+ on the USB. I thought it was too easy to say that it saved me £9 or $10 instead of buying the cable from Rev-ed so I tested the connections with my multimeter and it all seemed fine.
Note: I am yet to test this on a PICAXE IC (which should be arriving within a few days) but i'll post in this thread whether or not I was successful!
If anyone is interested I can probably help =)
