Let's Make Robots!

Robo Dragon

Hi, I'm a beginer in this kind of robotics so please hang with me if i ask stupid questions or don't know how to do simple things. This is a project I thought would be fun and a overall good challenge, so far all i have done is a prototype for the wing design. The wing should be able to fold in and fit next to the body. Ill post any updates in this blog and will start a project when i start making  the real robot, and not prototypes.

This robot will hopefully do the following:

  • walk (most important)
  • open/close wings
  • open/close mouth
  • wag tail
  • Roar
  • Flag wings
  • be voice controlled

I am planning on using (electical parts) :

  • VRbot- 1
  • Servo - 12
  • Speaker - 1
  • Arduino Mega 2560 and the sensor shield
  • Ultrasonic Distance sensor
  • Light sensor
  • Motion Sensor
  • Webcam

Estimated Cost  $288.87

Here is a picture of the prototype for the wing. It is kinda hard. to see but the pieces of metal are held togather with fishing line. Also i added a gear that is connected to the longest piece of metal, so the wing will be able to open and close.

THe Foot prototype. The real one will have a wide base, but overall the same design. What i want from the foot is the ablity to bend so if it encounters a raised object it won't completely fail.

Designs:  (Please tell me if you see a flaw in them)

Questions i have that i hope yall may be able to answer and save me hours of online searching:

Going to use cloth fabric for the wing?

A very good friend of mine goes to a lot of SciFi conventions here in the US and has a booth or table where he sells "soft-sculpture" dragon creatures with a bendable wire "skeleton", which people can have perched on their shoulders as they walk around.

These originally were non-moving, then he made some with moving wings but he has been working on a new line of dragons that will move their wings as well as their heads. He wanted the head to "track" objects, specifically people nearby. The idea was to scan the area (infrared or ultrasonic) and identify the nearest object, and then try to follow it, but without using expensive camera tech. He is trying to keep the costs down, since if he gets too much into them in parts, he will have to charge more than the customers would pay. So far, I think he only has his prototype, which he sets up in his booth to watch the customers going past. He had a "not for sale" sign on that one, at least until he gets a version he can mass produce and sell at a reasonable price.

(Since I have not talked to him about them for maybe 3 months, he may have them ready to go by now.)

I'm not sure if i'm going to use cloth or plastic plates. I'm kinda 50/50 on that design option.

As to the gear question, there are several places with inexpensive plastic gears on eBay. Just one Example: http://www.ebay.com/sch/m.html?_nkw=gears+-war&_sacat=0&_odkw=&_ipg=200&item=180604321727&pt=Radio_Control_Parts_Accessories&_osacat=0&hash=item2a0cdb3fbf&_ssn=philshobbyshop

That is just the first place I saw.  I am sure there are cheaper places if you do a search.

On the other hand, I recently scrapped out several old printers and got several gears out of each one.

Thanks for the link.
