I've never noticed fumes when microwaving. Only do it for 30 seconds at a time then check it. Too much heat causes it to bubble. See my walkthrough. Plenty of photos of showing how to melt it and make flat sheets.
It makes less mess than food. The question should be, "is the polymorph safe being put in the same microwave as food"

I use boiling water AND a candle, to get the right moldability (is that even a word?)
