Let's Make Robots!

PICKit 2

Hi,

I recently bought PICKit 2 Starter  which has a Programmer and Low Pin Count Demo Board containing PIC16F690. I was wondering if if will be to possible to program any other PIC chip (lets say PIC16F886) with this programmer. And would I be able to use the board with PIC16F886 chip. I should have just got PICKit that comes with PIC16F886.

I earlier started a topic about getting help on building an obstacle avoiding robot (and possible expansion in future to display lcd, to have light sensor, etc). With all the feedback I got, I was able to order needed parts from internet. I could not decide which PIC chip to use. But with little study I came to the conslusion that PIC16F886 would serve the purpose.

Since I got a free PIC16F690 chip with the starter kit, I was wondering if I could just use that for making my robot. Or what other PIC chip (considering implementation of more functions in future) I should use.  Any suggestions?

Also, what type of a PIC chip.....I mean there are like PIC16F886-E/SO, PIC16F886-E/SP. and few other chips. I just want the chip to be able to go on a normal breadboard.

Thanks in advance!

thanks!

 I connected Vss to ground.

But I guess the main problem was that I connected pickit2 the wrong way. Pin 1 is where the arrow is.

Without referring back to the documentation to refresh my memory, the only thing I can see wrong is that Vss is not connected to ground. Then again maybe you just didn't add that to the drawing.

Hi,

 Sorry for this late reply.

I could not even thank you when you answered my question.

 I tried connecting the PIC16F886 as you said.

It gave me "PK2Error0049: VPP Voltage error. Check target and retry operation"

error message (when I tried to select the programmer using MPLAB).

 I also did it by adding a 0.1 uF capacitor. I still got the same message.

I am attaching the photo of how I did it. tell me where I am wrong.

 pic16f886pinout.jpg I have PIC16F690 and PIC16F886 chips.

I will be happy running either one on my breadboard using PIC kit 2.

Thanks

Hey Bluffmaster

You can not use the PIC16F886 in the demo board but you can still program it whit the Pickit2 by connecting the program pin´s on the PIC16F886 to the Pickit2.

PIC           Pickit

_____
MCLR      -> Pin1
                   Pin2--5V
                   Pin3--GND
ICSPDAT -> Pin4
ICSPCLK -> Pin5
CLKOUT  -> Pin6
