Powering an Arduino: batteries/USB

I have an Arduino, with a Sharp IR sensor connected to it, and code that basically says:

If analog value from Sharp > certain value, turn LED on.

else, turn LED off.

When I plug my Arduino into my computer, and power it via USB, this works perfectly.

However, when I power it by batteries (4 x AAA), the LED is always on, even when there is nothing near the Sharp at all. Can anyone give an explanation of why this happens, or a solution to this problem?

Hello all. I was wondering if anybody could tell me how i could connect to my robot? I have built everything, and downloaded the axepad for the intel based mac as well as the usb driver, when i restarted my computer and went to my network under system preferences, the computer recognized the usb as some sort of modem

it gave me the following configuration options.

Problem with SparkFun PicAxe USB programmer cable

Ok, got to the point where it's time to start coding and I got power to everything that needed it and started installing the drivers needed for the Picaxe programmer cable. Well to no avail. If anybody has an idea a walkthrough it would be appreciated.

Parallel port control for a Mac

Anyone have experience with controlling a parallel (8 or more lines) output on a Mac (OS X)? I want to control my CNC machine with a parallel interface but Macs don't have parallel ports anymore. I need to find a suitable replacement, but a serial port/MCU would drastically complicate things. Please help! What hardware should I get?

USB to RC pulse controller

Hi, new to these forums and hoping someone can help me out!

I'm building a robot submarine (ROV) for fun on a pretty tight budget. The robot will have an on-board PC (in the form of a micro-ATX or nano-ATX motherboard) and will be controlled down a tether wire.

USB power?

Is it possible to use this USB breakout board as a 5 volt power supply for your microcontroller projects? If so, then do you have to use a voltage regulator?

hardware not found error

Hi,

I run the picaxe programming editor on windows XP in a virtual machine (parallels desktop) on my OS X laptop. The serial connection to the picaxe 28x1 works fine when I'm just communicating using hyperterm or when the picaxe sends debug info.

When I want to upload a program to the chip, it usually takes 4 or 5 tries to get it right. The larger the program, the more it fails to load.

So i decided to use the command line compiler for mac OS X. Now the uploads are very stable only a new problem appeared.
