&lt;p&gt;This is igor, my first robot.  His brains are a Make controller, a SAM7-based microcontroller which I gotta say was NOT the cheapest but for the most part is a joy to program.  The chassis is an octobot chassis from budget robotics, with an extra deck which is not attached in the photo..&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Anyway, I just put him mostly together tonight, and wrote a real quick app to test the IR rangefinders.  I&#039;m not really sure what his mission in life should be yet, but for now I&#039;m just gonna try to make him able to roam around and avoid stuff.&lt;/p&gt;

 <title>IR Versus Ultrasonic rangefinder on grass.</title>

 <description>&lt;p&gt;Hi, I&#039;m pretty much new to robotic, even though I&#039;ve worked with kit like fischertechnik and Lego NXT.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;I know the base of it, and i&#039;m good with electronics.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt; &lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;but here it is i want to build plane that coud fly by itself using rangefinder (Ir or ultrasonic) to keep a distance from the ground, but i&#039;ve read that IR sensor aren&#039;t good outside and that ultrasonic doesn&#039;t work good on absorbant material (Grass). &lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt; Since it&#039;s a plane I also have to consider weight in my choice. &lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Wich sensor would be the best for this task ?&lt;/p&gt;</description>

&lt;p&gt;After far to much time spent gathering parts, I put together my bot. I skipped using a servo for the moment so it turns on its tracks to measure distance left and right. After the time spent putting it together, and coding it, it felt amazing to see it navigating the kitchen floor.  <title>36 KHz modulated infrared light detector</title>

 <description>&lt;p&gt;I have started working on a new robot that is mainly based on LEGO MINDSTORMS NXT. This robot is aimed at participating in DTU robocup 2008 but time will tell if it will be finished in time.
