Let's Make Robots!

robot

where can i find these vex pieces?

okay, I have been scouring google trying to find the parts for the vex rcr mini walker crab thing, which should be displayed.

all the results I have found have been things like press announcements and demo robots built witgh this stuff, and none of it recent.

I personally want to build that walker, obviously with some extra personal touches added on, but I just cannot find the parts. every place seems to indicate that they were released, so did I just miss a limited run component or something?

How to Survive a Robot Uprising

My favorite modern Robotica author, DH Wilson PhD in robotics.  He defines robots in a way that excludes bristlebots without sensors so beam fanatics, be ware-this will angry up the blood.  Otherwise, there's some good advice! ;-)

LMR meeting in Shanghai

lumi's picture

We did it again. This time our friend OddBot (Russel) visited Shanghai and we got the chance to meet again, even with his limited time in Shanghai.

So, who is "we"? That's MarkusB (Markus), Taweili (David) and me. You can see Russel, Markus and me on the following picture. David as a photographer is behind the cam (sorry about the quality but this is not David's fault but the cheapy Point-and-Shoot camera ;-)

This is my project [DON'T LOOK, JUST BORING]

BotFIN's picture

STARTED 5.7.2012

Okay, so here's my project, what i am designing.
It is a robot arm!
Some stats:

- 4 servos, not very big
- PICAXE 14M as brain
- SM-S3317S 2.0kg at 4.8V
- 4 Rechargeable 1.2V batteries
- Polymorph and lightweight woodsticks as materials
- Maybe somekind of sensor and IR receiver
- Potentiometer to control

Pictures coming soon!

Wireless question(s).

I have very little knowledge of connecting a controller to a PC by wireless.

I want to connect my FEZ Mini Robot to my PC wirelessly and I have NO idea which way to go. I want something that is fairly inexpensive and makes for an eazy wirelss connection to my PC. bluetooth, WiFI other??? Range isn't a big thing, and I would like to send C# programs to the robot and then send back data (or debug information.)

I am VERY open to suggestions, so what are your ideas. These ideas need to be fully functional with no "experimental" setups.

I need something that works.

I really like my FEZ Mini Robot.

I am totally ejoying my FEZ Mini Robot! I thought the C# code might be hard for me but I am really starting to like that language. It is a "shift" in ones thinking about writing a good program. Now I am sure I would "mix some things up" if I went back to programming on a Arduino.

No fears mate about the C# code running on the FEZ Mini, it works just fine. The build/deploy/debug procedure works, but it still holds a lot of secrets. (The FEZ Mini board sends back "Rebooting..." like your device is acting like small computer!)

IR navigation beacons

OddBot's picture

There have been several previous blogs and forums on LMR concerning different methods of robot navigation and room recognition. I have decided to make some IR beacons for experimenting with.

My theory is that if each room has at least 3 beacons spaced around it then the robot can not only triangulate it's position within the room but also determine what angle it is facing. Each beacon sends out a different identification code. This allows the robot to know which room it is in.

Awesome website!

Yes, LMR IS an awesome website, but some may also be interested in one I found.

See: http://www.helloapps.com/index.html  All the files and tutorials for getting into MRDS.

"Microsoft Robotics Develpement Studio" (Covering both versions 3 and 4,)

This website covers all aspects of robot system modeling including mesh design and science.

(I have a book on MRDS, but trust me, this website is easy compared to the book.)

When you get a chance, check it out.

A little robots journey - Epilog

lumi's picture

Finally EL2ISA2 aka Artoo is back from his journey. Like in the vaste of the universe he was travelling thousands of lightyears kilometers/miles throught China: Following up the previous travel reports: Tatooine, here and here. Here are some of the pictures and comments of his adventure.

Bluetooth and XBEE

Hi, I am working on a project that includes contolling a robot wirelessly though visual basic 2010. And I was researching and found that if you use an xbee it is the same code as when using a usb cord. But i want to use bluetooth instead. And I was wondering if the code is the same when using bluetooth (like the xbee). I assume that it is the same because it is a form of RF. But I need to know from LMR if it is the same code with Bluetooth or is it different.

Thanks,

Very interesting work of making a robot learn about itself using gyro feedback and programming in rules based around this.

Looks like it would be a quicker way to program robots to do complex tasks perhaps...

Annual Online LMRobo-games!!!

MetalmonkeeLad's picture

What if somebody makes an annual robo-games for LMR members that is held online? just like Robotgrrl's robot party but with games and stuff e.g. online robot racing, online robot chess games(for those who do have chess playing robots, and connect them o the internet and play with other people), robot catwalk, coolest robot of the year...etc. and the prizes would be certificates that can be sent and print by the winner, or stuff that i don't know.

so, anyone interested in this kind of concept?

Micro Magician robot controller - I can finally tick the project complete box!

OddBot's picture

I started designing this controller in December 2011. After 4 months and 2 previous revisions it will finally be shipping out April 2012. I think this is DAGU's best Arduino compatible robot controller yet!

Designed for small robots using small batteries, the Micro Magician is a 3.3V controller running at 8MHz.
Working from 4.5V to 9V means this constroller can run from a single LiPo cell or 3x NiMh batteries.
Reverse polarity protection means no blue smoke if you get your power wires crossed (reverse polarity diode rated at 3A).

TITAN robot

This project is HUGE. Lets start form the begining, I am a university student and for my final project I wanted to do a big robot, that is untill I found out that the university picks a group of projects and you choose one, so I've decided to make it anyway.

UPDATE: New post has me controlling servos with my arms!!! check it out at my blog

IRIS System - update 5

An-Tech's picture

I've been doing alot of work on the project latley, but not posting about it here very often. It's mostly coda and small stuff, but if you want to follow the progress or help in any way, go to my github page: https://github.com/ANTlabs/IRIS-System

Be sure to view the wiki or readme first!

IRIS System - update 4

An-Tech's picture

I pretty much have the sound systems up and running, the speakers are working great with some minor audio distortion (but that's probably because when I tested it, I didn't have the capacitors in). The microphone on the other hand is having some issues. I'm using the circuit from the demo board and the microphone to headphones object, but the audio I get back is very grainy. To get anything at all, I have to be within an inch of the mic. (could be because I yanked it out of an old phone). But overall, I get some audio.

Gears and gearboxes. What do you want for your robot?

OddBot's picture

Sometimes when your building a robot you will need gears. Although there are plenty of ready made gearboxes on the market they will not always fit your needs. I have been looking at puting together a collection of gears, shafts and even small bearings so that you can build you own gearboxs.

I started off with the green bevel gears shown below, they have big, strong, chunky teeth that are hard to break. These allow you to have a 90° output.

UGV trainer kit - Unmanned Ground Vehicle

OddBot's picture

Typically when I hear the words "Unmanned Ground Vehicle", I tend to think of military and off-road vehicles but these days big companies are investing millions of dollars on cars that can drive themselves.

This kit is an affordable beginners kit to help students and hobbyist learn the basics. Using the Arduino compatible Micro Magician robot controller with it's library of basic control functions ensures an easy and fun learning curve.
