This quest to build a stand-alone I2C pan/tilt range finder controller started with an article here by Ladvien.  In    http://letsmakerobots.com/node/39130, Ladvien explores using an ATtiny85 (84) as an I2C motor controller...

And in http://letsmakerobots.com/node/39222,   Chris the Carpenter   gives us an awesome pan and tilt code example... so...

I've apparently been mistreating my MaxSonar EZ-1.   I can't find where i stole.. er... borrowed my idea from for averaging a series of responses to reduce the inconsistencies, but I was looking up some information on the Arduino pulseIN() timeout (Thanks Oddbot!) and came across http://playground.arduino.cc/Main/MaxSonar   ... Yeah... I know it should have been one of my first places to look, but...

Ok, so it's nowhere near perfect, but I thought I would post the code here in case anyone else wanted to tinker.

The sonar.php  file which displays the instrument expects it's data as a JSON encoded data set in the form of:

Does anyone have decent code for an HTML5 (canvas) sonar sweep?

Currently, I use a Google Chart to image my sonar sweep onto the web control page ..... once the scan has completed...  yeah...Too little too late.

 

I'm going to embark on coding the HTML5/Jscript  tonight if nothing exists that I can pilfer.. .er ... borrow.

What I'm looking for is a scan that takes "angle,distance"  pairs, and maps them onto a HTML5 canvas (of course removing previous one for that relative angle) and then doing a "lineto(x,y)" from the previous one.

IR v. Sonar

I've been making plan for an obstacle-avoiding robot, and was originally planning to use a Sharp IR range finder for it (10 - 80cm), but after seeing other sonar range finders, and other people's projects (the majority of the ones I see seem to use sonar), I was wondering:

Which is better: IR or sonar?

'Cos IR recievers can be affected by ambient IR light, and the best i;ve seen goes up to 150cm, whereas I;ve seen sonar ones up to 7.4m, roundabout, and they can't be affected by ambient sound (I think).

Basic Triagulation Positioning System

3 Friends and I are building an autonomous tennis ball collecting robot for a 4th year design project for our undergrad.

We need a way for the robot to keep track of its position on the tennis court (in doors) and we are thinking of using 2 beacons to emit signals with a receiver on the robot. Has anybody done something like this before? Has anyone heard of pre-packaged solutions that do just this? A USB module would be ideal (we are using a netbook to control the robot), but we are not at all opposed to building the positioning system from scratch.
