Best microcontroller for me to use?

Hey guys, Cycloned here. I am just hoping to start with Robotics. I know nothing, I have an NXT kit and have done some work with that, but nothing at a higher level, and now that Im in engineering I understand I've got to stop using such kits and actually start building robots from parts. I would like to know what microcontroller that I should use. There are some events in my college (robo wars, robo soccer, sumo wars, and an obstacle course) that I wish to participate, so I was wondering what would be well suited for such competitons.

noob seraching for best microcontroller

simply put i'm trying to figure out witch microcontroller would be best for my purposes. the things i need are 3 pwm pins, 2 normal io pins, as well as what ever else i need pin-wise to controll a nrf24l01+ transceiver

i'm also trying to keep this as light as posible, as its gonna be the rx side of a tiny rc airplane, just under 6in wingspan p-38 lightning . i figure one pwm for the pager motors, and one each for the aleron coils and the two normal pins for current direction, though if needed i could use a spring and the coils to skip the other two pins.

Learning to Program PICs in C (which compiler to learn with)

Hello LMR,

I'm a newbie here and I was hoping to draw upon the collective wisdom of your members. first of all let me say in no uncertain terms that I do not fancy myself a programmer. I have tinkered around with PIC microcontrollers for a few year using assembler (MPASM) and a little basic (PIC Basic Pro). I can usually muttle through making a simple project with these tools. But now I find myself deployed with a lot of time on my hands and I want to put it to use learning to program in C.

Thinking about building a 1 Bit Microcontroller

Okay, so I have done quite a bit of research online. I have fairly good sites for building the CPU itself, with the main ones being Minecraft and Duo (mine would resemble the Minecraft one much more, contain 2 registers, might add some more opcode though). Also, I have found a 1-bit CPU, the mc14500 from quite a few years past.

Augmenting a microcontroller?

I need help augmenting a microcontroller. I have a bit of a problem. If I may digress, I first bought and assembled fritsl's Start Here 2.0 robot. I even programmed it using some of the sample code and some of my own (limited) BASIC knowledge. Soon enough I had a little robot running around the floor. I even named him Pal and put some LED's in the two mounting screw holes on the distance sensor. After my initial success, I went to the internet to learn more and hit a dead end.

Attiny-Duino or whatever?

Hi geeks ;-)

I am thinking about to shrink some of my projects. That's the deal. I am planning to build a Attiny-Duino.

What would you think about it's usage? For myself I would use it in the Insect bot to reduce the weight, costs and power comsumption.

My first PCB since 1988 and I will call it AT-LUMI-TINY ;-) This board is still far from perfect (see the jumper wires) but it's my first 1-layer board created on the computer. 

Creating a Microcontroller from Scratch

So i want to make a basic first robot and i understand what to do with an already built microcontroller but as a challenge i actually want to build a microcontroller from SCRATCH.

Accuracy of 28 X1 without external resonator?

In my circuit, I have 2 Picaxe 28X1s. The only suitable external ceramic resonator I have is on the 28 pin project board and I don't want to ruin it by accident during desoldering. I am making my own board for each Picaxe, and need to know how accurate the timing of the Picaxes will be only using the internal resonator. Picaxe A is using 2 PWM channels driving motors on a separate power supply handled by an L293D, all other outputs to drive other ICs, will read 1 ADC channel, 2 digital sensors, and 1 digital input.

Differences between arduino and arduino pro microcontrollers

The reason why I am asking this is that Robotshop has some serious issues regarding the shipping of a plain, simple arduino mini microcontroller. However, the arduino mini pro microcontroller seems to be in stock. I am planning on re-using the microcontroller. Can I use a mini pro microcontroller instead? What will I lose?

Shared microcontroller pin

A quick search here did not give me any relevant hits. So, I was hoping to ask the electronic gurus here if my plan/idea will work.

My thinking is that the photoresistor will be able to be read by the analog input and, because of the diode, the LED will not light unless the microcontroller is set as an output and set LOW.

EDIT:

Based on the input so far, I have redrawn the circuit. I hope the collective doesn't mind helping me get circuits straight.

Connecting Multiple Microcontrollers

I was wondering if it would be possibly to connect multiple microcontroller IC's by there I/O ports?

i have  a problem: i only have on uc, an arduino, and have to build a tx unit with some cheap ebay radio modules. does anyone have any suggestions as to a small microcontroller for this unit. it only needs 2 or 3 channels.

Thank you all so much for your help, especially ignoblegnome (+others). I have yet to fit the board to my bot, but will do that tomorrow.

Although it uses the same chassis as my first robot, it is entirely different. I am trying to do an AmandaLDR as fritsl's, (except with LED's), so I will probably put it in the robot section (if it works).

I wanna a project for my studies...

here is what i would like to make..

1. A RC Car that is controlled via computer and not by the its remote. i wanna create a application that controls the car and also displays real time video.

2. I wanna use zigbee (XBEE pro) for transmitting and receving commands and controls.

3. Wanna use mobile phone (wifi) camera for video transmission.

Project: graphing with graphical LCD using microcontroller

anyone knows what LCd best suits my project?.. the project goes like this: An LCD will dipslay a graph of temperature profile of a heater -- that is, a thermocouple connected to the heater sends signals to the microcontroller and the microcontroller must send signals to the LCD to graph the temperature versus time line graph.

If anyone knows, how should the program go?..please help me
