Automated Light Switch - Laziness Prevails!

The Video explains all.

This is my automated light switch, built in a little under 2 hours. Just one application that a servo can be used for.

The servo is just mounted on some hastily cut masonite, the triangular brackets are just glued to the main board with PVA, and everything else is held together with double sided foam tape.

How do I control 18 digital servos with a 28x1?

How do I control 18 digital servos with a Picaxe 28x1?

I have the microcontroller board with the 28x1 mounted and I've tried building the "start here" robo. 

 I now would like to know how to be able to control 18 digital servos since I am building a Hexapod :)

All I really need to know is what extensionboard I need.

Radio Controlled Servo?

I am completely new to robot building, and electronics in general.  I am currently working on a homemade airsoft claymore.  It is designed to be toggled via a wireless remote control. The issue is that I don't know much about wiring remote controlled systems. I've built a few remote controlled cars, but they were from kits, so I really didn't understand the electronic aspects: I just assembled them by following the instructions. Can i control a servo with a 555 timer?

Hi,

I would like to sweep a servo back and forth, and theres no point on using the arduino for this, and thats all i have at the moment, so if i supply 0v to the yellow wire on the servo(signal) and then supply it with 5v, then 0, then 5v again.... would it sweep the servo? or does it have to be modulated?

Hello and greetings from Norway.

Since the winter is creeping upon this very cold land that I live in, and the sun is hiding just about all the day, its time to start some indoor project.

I have always been fascinated by DIY robots and have had many "Brilliant" (horrible stupid) ideas for designing and building them.

But finally i have started a robot project for real. wohoo!

 

How to reduce servo noise?

So it has come to my attention that like motors, servos too need capacitors over the power and signal lines. Well my question is exactly what value capacitor and on what servo pin. I looked online and could not exactly find it, maybe you have a link. I dont know if it is specific to what servo you have but here is the link to mine http://www.hobbypartz.com/topromisesg9.html

SSS - Servo Suspension System

This is my first experiment with the MakerBot. I am totally thrilled with this machine!!!

SSS (servo suspension system) is designed to support standard servo motors and act as a basic suspension. It is still a work in progress and has not been tested yet.

Will update results as soon as possible (still waiting to have my lab back).


I would like to know everyone's opinion on this  :)

Practical question about servos and capacitors

I have read in many places on this site about using capacitors to reduce motor and servo noise. I am now using 0.1 uF capacitors across the leads of my motors as standard practice. I'm also using 470 uF and 0.1 uF capacitors around both sides of my voltage regulator. As yet I haven't tried applying a cap to a servo, and I have a quick question.

finding cheap RC ESC (speed controller)

I love RC ESCs. They are electronic speed controllers that you connect to a servo output on a RC receiver or a micro controller, and they give you full step free control over a big motor in both direction. Most of the ones made for RC cars work in the voltage range 6-8.4Volts, but there are several alternatives for people who plan to run up to 24 volt motors in almost constant stall at a gazzilion amps (read robot war contenders).

But I'm the eternal cheapskate, and wants the cheapest there is.. So far I've found this

I know..a lot of you good folks could solder before you could walk and probably sleep with a soldering iron under your pillow (hope you remember to turn it off :), so here is this guy in his 30s bragging about his first circuit. Pathetic.

However soldering is a major challenge to me and actually the main reason I didn't get started with robotics years ago. It's just not easy for my unsteady hands. So I'm very happy to declare that I just finished my 1st working non-breadboard circuit. It's a motor+servo shield for my Arduino.

Sensing servo feedback

Hi,

I'm new to this forum, robotics, electronics and microcontrollers, however I have been programming a long time and I'm currently studying computer science.

I recently bought an Arduino board with the purpose of making robots for experimenting with my special interest: AI.

I wish to build a walking robot and experiment with varios ways of giving it a nervous system. So I will need to find a way to get feedback directly from the servos, thereby being able to read the amount of stress (load) they experience at a given time.

What digital servo uses a Atmel 168 internally?

Several months ago I read a post on LMR about a digital servo that was controlled by a Atmel 168. Now when I say controlled, I don't mean hooking a servo to a microcontroller the normal way, I mean the motor controller board inside the servo had a Amtel 168 chip on it.

Just to clarify - I'm not trying to figure out how to control a servo with a microcontroller (like an arduino). I'm looking for a servo that uses an atmel chip on the controller board inside the servo.

ldr test

I made a simple test project just to see how an ldr works... i used a servo to indicate the light level read from the ldr...

The video is a bit shaky, but i think it is good enough for its purposes :P

The Diamond on the left is the Picaxe pin, I normally use a resistor 100-200R just to protect the Micro just incase of short or plugging the servo in backwards (there are two types of people using servos, those who have plugged servos in backwards and those who are about too!).

Programming help, sharp IR mounted on servo

I am trying to control my bot using a sharp IR sensor mounted on hitec servo with arduino mega. The pseudocode i have so far is as follows:

1. Set servo at 90deg and read IR sensor value
2. If val > 200, then stop the bot for a second
  a. Turn servo 0 deg completely and read ir val
  b. if val < 200 then turn bot left
  c. else turn servo 180 deg and read ir val
  d. if val < 200 then turn bot right
  e. else if cant turn right or left, reverse a bit and then turn the bot 180 degree and go straight.

Picaxe LCD Direct Connection Problem

Hey There,

I've hit a snag on a project of mine. I've been trying to build a servo calibrator (to test a servo's limits and test them on robots before they're connected to the motherboard) which should operate by positioning a servo depending on the position of a potentiometer, and display the pulse rate on a 16x2 LCD. I've built one before, with an LED display and a single servo output, but this one should handle two servos.

Except it doesn't. I won't even handle one.  There's two major problems I've found which I'm looking for solutions to.

Powering Arduino and servos/motors with one supply

Helo, all

I tried to power Arduino (Duemilianove) and servos/motors it controlled with the same battery, but Arduino continuously restarted during the operation. Actually it was a surprise for me, since Arduino already has voltage regulator chip and filtering capacitors in the input circuits...

I solve this problem by supplying them with different batteries, but I don't like this solution. Could anyone help - how to provide single power supply?

Arduino servo twitching

Servo twitching. I know, simple stuff, but it's interesting to play with on new hardware. Another Arduino example "sketch" (they got a number of these) called Sweep simply moves a servo through a set range, back and forth. Just looking at the sketch (listed at bottom) this timeshows a servo controlsignla connected to pin 9. They recommend using the boards 5 volts to power the servo, which is coming from the USB connection. If I'd had a bigger servo, or was under load, it might be appraoching the 500 mA USB limit (or is it more now?).

Speaker Noise

Greetings fellows,

Still plugging away on my big project. All goes well, except my 8ohm speaker is giving off a trememdous amount of noise while it's on. It works fine, but there is always a high-pitched "white" noise.

In addition, my project uses small servos, and i've noticed a "click" sound come out of the speaker whenever I turn the servo off (low 1). I assume the problems are related.

Is there too much power going to the speaker? Do I need some sort of voltage regulation or supressive diodes or who knows what?
