How to build BeagleBoard based WiFi robot

AndreyNech's picture

Some time ago I have announced my remotely (over the Internet) controlled robot. However, there were not too much documentation and details. So with this post I would like to announce the availability of more detailed project documentation and make brief overview of some interesting aspects of the project. The whole available documentation could be found on the project Wiki.

Need Guru Help Regarding Micro-Controller + Wireless

GroG's picture

Hello !
What is the most inexpensive, yet stable robust and relatively fast micro-controller + wireless setup?

I have been asking this question to myself for way too long... Now, I'm curious of your experiences in the different flavors available..

In my specific situation talking back and forth to a computer or laptop would be the primary objective.

RC car

MG2R's picture

Ok, so I'm working on a plan to bring my little brother's little Niko RC car (you know, these models that suddenly break down for no reason at all after three charges) back to life. The plan is:

  1. Yank out old electronics (fun job, done ^^)
  2. Test steering servo and current draw of drive motor
  3. Build new electronics

Step 2 will be done by tonight but I have a few hickups on step three.

Note to self: zipit runs linux

I just learned about a thingy called zipit. Apparently it can run a linux distro and then the world is your oyster. Click the pic.

Just mentioning it here so I will ind it again when searching my fav search engine.

WiFinder Robot

I'm making a WiFinder robot and I am having some trouble with my arduino code.

I want to be able to set the robot to a wifi network and have it follow the strongest wifi signal. I plan to have edge detection for stairs and distance from wall sensing. I am having trouble finding the code to be able to get the WiFly to send its signal strength to the arduino, and then converting it to an integer. I know that the the wifly will respond to the command "show rssi" with the signal strength. please help

my code follows:

Wifi logic robot

chintz's picture

So I was thinking, What if robots didn't do the "thinking" right there but sent it to a pc set to run the logic of the robot and then sent it back to the robot via wifi? I think it would be and faster and more powerfull then doing it on a tiny microcontroller.

Any ideas?

Recommendations for WiFi components

lex lee's picture

Hi guys,

I'm thinking of using WiFi as a mode of communication with my robot from my laptop.

So far, I'm only able to find three modules by Roving Network on SparkFun:

what are the specs to lookout for in selecting the right module?

General help Needed - Desiging next robot

Hi. I am making a robot that runs like a car but has a camera on it and runs over wifi. Sort of an city explorer bot. Does anyone have any suggestions on the parts I need (based on my framework), or any other parts? Or any other recommendations whatsoever? any help isgreatly apprieciated.

Routerbot (Without hacking the router)

I am intending to build a routerbot. This is my design idea. This is my first major robot so please comment and suggest if even the slightest urge arises.

I will call the robot flat friday.

WiFi - how can I talk to my bot with it?

OddBot's picture

I don't know much about networks and communications but most laptops and routers these days are wireless. Can we use this to interface with our bots?

A quick google on WiFi protocol told me that it is technically referred to as the 802.11 protocol.

The Xbee transceivers can also form a wireless network using the 802.15.4 protocol.

This is the very popular 2.4GHz XBee module from Digi (formally Maxstream). These modules take the 802.15.4 stack (the basis for Zigbee) and wrap it into a simple … Read more

How can I add Wifi to my robot?

jgillick's picture

I'm new to robotics but have dabbled in Microcontrollers the last few years and develop software for a living. One thing I've been dreaming of doing for awhile is builting a blimp robot that is controlled over wifi, but I can't seem to find information on is how to connect microcontrollers to some sort of wifi interface. I'm hoping there's some sort of module somewhere that I can interface with.

Here's the plan:
