Prototype animatronic head

Well my boss is involved in organizing a robot head building contest in China and asked me to make an example to inspire the contestants. I know many will just be made from cardboard and wood but I decided that if I was going to spend time on this project then I wanted to make the most of it and develop a new product.

Basic 74AC240 Bicore

I wanted to upgrade him with a solar engine, and I decided on the FRED solar engine.  Originally, I was going to build the FLED solar engine, but it is so inefficent it drove my perfectionist side insane.  Sooooo, I ended up spending half an hour getting this circuit to work, and I suceeded in getting it to pulse in direct sunlight and under an incandescent desk lamp.  The FLED couldn't even pulse with the light bulb literally on top of the solar cell!

I included a video of it pulsing wherever videos I embed in my posts go/are.

Remote 3 Axis Camera Head with motion control

I`ve been wanting to build a mid size remote controlled camera head that has 3 axis and can be computer controlled and repeat its motion. I have a few RC helicopters that we build very basic 2 axis heads on, that work with servos and have a gyro to keep level.

The idea would be for it to rotate at about 300 degrees per second and to be able to feater in and out the motin for it to be smooth. I would also like to try to put some gyros on it, to stabilize it if it is free swinging on the back of a car or helicopter.

Update - 23/02/11 The hardware for elroy is almost complete, only the stretch sensors for the head to make and mount.  I can now control the elbow, shoulder and … Read more

messing with the motor outs (A and B)

Just a thought:

(lets call the four motor outputs A1, A2, B1 and B2)

What would happened if I connected a GM10 (with the original spring still attached) between B2 and A2? Like in the illustration below

I was hoping to achieve the following:
