Arduino/ servo/ RC basics

I'll start off admitting that I'm a complete novice at robot building, so pardon me for what is probably stupid questions. I have bought an arduino with the intention of building a robot and have an idea of doing so mainly with servos, and I know that I can probably run them off the arduino without any problems helped by the arduino servo library, but can I just plug them in directly to the arduino or do I need a resistor in between or something? And question 2 How do I make my robot controllable via R/C? How do I put those circuits(?) together?

spybot 1.0

Hi LMR! I got the idea to make a little robot, with 4 wheels that van drive around. Ok, what's cool about that... so I decided to add in a camera and a wireless connection to a pc. I'm a total beginner to this BTW, but I'll figure out how to program it. The overall idea is to make a robot I can control from my pc, that transmits It's video signal to my pc so I can se where it is. My question is, which components would he suitable for my project? I was thinking about getting a wi-fi connection to work with my pc, will that work?

Where to begin with PIC chips?

NiteLynr's picture

Okay, so I've gone out & bought my Arduino clone, had fun* with it, bought a truckload of ATMEGA 48-328's & had fun* with them and would like to now broaden my horizons a little. I'd like to see what's on the other side of the fence & give PIC chips a try. From what I can see, both have their advantages/disadvantages & can excel in some areas where the other may flounder.

My First Robot

This is my first robot. It uses a POP-168 power board (which is based off a arduino ATmega 168). It uses two DC motors for movement, and a parallax standard servo motor with a sharp IR sensor mounted on it for object detection.

a circuit to make a 3 way switch

Thanks a lot for the support you people showed last time. I want to make a circuit which has 2 LEDs and a normal on/off switch (at least) and other components as required. The circuit should function like this- When i turn the switch on for the 1st time, LED 1 glows but LED 2 remains switched off. When i turn the switch off for the 1st time, both LED 1 and 2 remain off. When i turn the switch on for the 2nd time, LED 2 glows but LED 1 remains switched off. When i turn the switch off for the 2nd time, both LED 1 and 2 remain off. Please provide me with a circuit diagarm for the same and

Recomendations for a School Lab?

CalvertSan's picture

I am setting up a basic electronics/robotics lab at my school. I have been trying to figure out what a good soldering iron would be for the classroom or if one of the kits available, which contain other useful tools, are viable. This is a class/club where both the students and teacher (me) are relatively inexperienced. We bought some cheap soldering irons last year but they are already useless and I don't want to make the same mistake twice. So, I guess I'm looking for warnings as much as recommendations.

How to get needed materials ?

Hi, I'm beginner of this world. Wanna get some help. Where i can get the materials if don't have any credit card ? Or maybe there's a guide how to build it ? Thanks

High Speed Photography Help!

Hello everyone!

this is my first post so im pretty excited haha.

i want to know how to create something so i can shoot high speed photography.

an example of what i would like to do is of a water droplet hitting a bowl of water and snapping a picture when the "crown" (part of the water which gets drawn up from the result of disrupting the water bowl".

i was thinking about a laser activated "flash" which fires the flash of the camera after the beam is broken, but it should have a delay so i can fine tune it and get the perfect image.

Oh my am I ever excited

Good news everybody!

I'm new. My name's Cam. I've never built a robot or any electronic circuit but for some reason I'm super-confident that I'll be awesome at it.

I have a little bit of scripting/coding experience, I'm hoping at least some of that translates over to robot building. I'll have a heap of help at least to start off with from a friend of mine, he's never built robots either, or really done much in electronics, but he's an engineer ooh wow

4 Motors on a 28 pin Project Board (AXE020)

I am looking to upgrade my first robot which is built from the LMR Starter Bundle. I to start out I would like to upgrade to 4 motors. Currently I only see the A & B pins for motor control. The motors do not need to be independently controled, I only need to be able to control 2 at a time. Is this doable?

Also, I eventually want to upgrade to bigger motors, would it be easier instead using 4 triacs or relays?

Thanks,

This is a very simple question and I am only asking because it is fundamental to my first robot (and I don't have the money to get this bit wrong).

So I'm a complete beginner at this. I know ohm's law and generally what components do, but I've never tried to put anything together yet.

Going to build a YDM!

'Going to build a YDM'

Bit ambitious as a first project, but I have 'some' background in programing.

Right now I am a student at University of Idaho. I am taking C++ and attend the ACM meetings. ACM is a group on campus that does programing challenges and is now dabling in robotics. They recently got an Arduino board, and it is my understanding that it uses C++.

This will be my first robot, except for a semester in high school where I programed a robot to navigate a maze using only a sequence of commands.

Large Solenoid Actuator driven Display

Hello, I am new to this site so I hope you won’t mind if I ask a few questions that I am sure are going to sound quite amateurish to most of you.

I am an American living in Berlin working on a collaboration between two art research institutes here.  I have been given the task of putting together a proposal for a dynamic moving display. That will be featured next year as part of a conference on kinesthesia.

Battery Question

Hi all,

I am very new to building robots and don't have much knowledge of electronics, apart from the basics many years ago at school.

However, I got an arduino at the weekend and have started doing experiments with it. I've just managed to take apart a cheap RC toy car and get the arduino to make it go backwards and forwards via a L293D motor driver and a very basic program. There are two motors in the car - the other one is a DC one attached to rack and pinion steering - I've not connected this to the other side of the L239D though yet.

hey,

So i"m an advanced desktop/web apps programmer and MCTS WinDev so far, and I've done it all completely on my own.

After a few weeks of research now I've realized I might be able to build a simple robot, I've already chosen my shop and products, my ideas are usually quite ambitious.

Best for Beginners?

bluesthue's picture

I am an absolute beginner... i have very little experience in electronics, very little experience in mechanics... but i am an expert programmer...  my question is: what do you recommend for a beginner wanting to get into robotics?  I am thinking I might want to get a roboduino board but I see here a lot of people are using picaxe.

The advantages of something like the roboduino is that the board is pretty self contained and wouldn't need a seperate board to drive the servos...

Any suggestions as to what type of micro-controller might be best to start with?

Beginner robot..suggestions please!! (Axon and VEX for the bot)

Hello

Im envisaging on building my first robot, so would greatly appreciate any advice.

About me > I've some basic programming skills through GW-Basic and QuickBASIC which i learnt nearly 10yrs back. I suck at C programming, and am not well versed with microcontrollers/electronics, although im sure i can learn (maybe not C!!). Mechanically, im sure i can conjure up something fairly decent, if not pathetic!

Arduino servo twitching

robologist's picture

Servo twitching. I know, simple stuff, but it's interesting to play with on new hardware. Another Arduino example "sketch" (they got a number of these) called Sweep simply moves a servo through a set range, back and forth. Just looking at the sketch (listed at bottom) this timeshows a servo controlsignla connected to pin 9. They recommend using the boards 5 volts to power the servo, which is coming from the USB connection. If I'd had a bigger servo, or was under load, it might be appraoching the 500 mA USB limit (or is it more now?).
