Let's Make Robots!

rotary encoder

Joystick controlled vehicle drive system with independing wheels.

The idea that finally got me back into robot building. Or at least design using electroics.

The premise is to create a new drive system for a vehicle. I want to start small at first, then grow larger up to person carrying abilities. I have a lot of previous experience creating glorified RC cars for "robot" competisions, so I'm not trying to do anything autonomous, or even remote controled.

Parallax Incremental Rotary Encoder

I've found an awesome rotary encoder (I believe it was the smallest on Rootshop) but I have no idea how to use it? I believe there's an input, a ground and a signal pin, but I don't know how to configure it or anything. I'm going to be using it with an arduino.

I've digged the web and have found no documentation. Just sayin

Thanks ;)This thing is approximatively a 2,5 cm cube

Need to count state changes on rotary encoder

I recently added a rotary encoder to a hacked servo.

I'm trying to count the number of state changes (Channel A or Channel B), so I can use this to determine how far the encoder has rotated.

Arduino code posted below.

Hacked some servos for fun

I had a GWS S03TXF 2BB servo that I had previously released the magic smoke from. It's been sitting on my desk, labeled "bad" for some time. I took it apart and could see that the board shows visible signs of frying.

I also had a GWS S03N STD servo that I had butched for the brains, in order to try to create a mongo-sized servo for steering YardGnome (a work in progress).

Simple Optical/Rotary Encoder Generator

Was building a simple Rotary Encoder for the ARP platofrm yesterday. Could not find a simple tool to generate the pattern according to my needs, there were some Postscript based tools but they did not work on Windows.

So here is my little script to generate it ...

PHP Code:

header("Content-type: image/gif");
$size = isset($_GET['size'])?intval($_GET['size']):200;
$size1 = isset($_GET['size1'])?intval($_GET['size1']):0;
$count = isset($_GET['count'])?intval($_GET['count']):10;
