Let's Make Robots!

Jaimi`s giant robot commercialised?

Seems like the spider walker mechanism inside the giant robot has been put into production. I`d love to get one to tear apart!

Hexbugs Spider.

VB programming help wanted! Plotting serial data.

Hi guys, I`m attempting my own low speed arduino oscilloscope but have hit a brick wall with my mediocre programming skills. The arduino program and input stage works fine, it`s the PC software thats killing me.

Incredible wooden mechanical machines video

Have a look at the engineering that has gone into some of these machines. I especially like the gearbox mechanism on the 2nd video to change from raising to extending the arm.

step-up or joule thief or.. ?

I`m trying to convert the wireless doorbell outside from battery to a renewable source such as solar or wind. My problem lies in that the battery required is a 9v.

My first thought was to produce a high enough voltage to charge the 9v but that might require more solar panels than I have. The 2nd idea was to use a lower voltage battery or super-cap as replacement and stepping up the voltage to 9v. I haven`t taken any measurements of current usage but I don`t imagine it could be more than a couple hundred mA while pushing the button and much lower in idle.

SparkFun vs SPARC. Trademark infringement or rabid lawyers?

Everyones favourite supplier of robot goodies receives a cease and desist letter from SPARC over trademark infringement. Read the whole thing here.

SPARC really have no idea do they? If you have ever ordered goods from SparkFun before and wouldn`t like to see them forced to change their name by a big company send a quick email to sparcinfo@sparc.org saying what you think of this. Don`t forget, be polite, we are all adults.

Hondas new balancing personal transport.

Apparently its insides is a big secret but if you look closely you can see the machine actually moving sideways as it keeps balance.

I don`t know about you guys but as soon as I saw it I wanted to pull it apart to find out how it works, or at least turn it upside down and take a look at the bottom.

Japanese geisha robots!

The latest humanoid robots from the land of the rising sun. God help us..

On a side note, I want to see this movie.

Edit: Warning! Danger to young minds! Fake blood and stupidity abounds!

What to do with a drunken sailo.. err linear slide?

Ok I was cleaning up around the work bench and found this stepper and belt linear slide assembly that came from a printer. I had kept it to knock up a cheap x/y plotter, but I scrapped that idea and am building a CNC out of better stuff. It seemed like such a waste to destroy or scavenge the motor from it so I need some ideas of what to use this for. The stroke is about 350mm if something were to be attached to the belt, but theres no reason it can`t rotate continuously for something. I also have the metal strip that was used as a slide for the opposite side.

Plastic thats invisible to IR light?

There are lots of great and interesting little robots on this site and on the web, but so many of them use the sharp IR detectors that they all start to look the same. I wanted to do something different and a bit more aesthetically nice, so I thought what if I could get some plastic thats transparent to IR. Then I could hide the IR sensors behind them and completely change the look.

Water Powered Jet Pack!!

How much fun could you have with one of these?
