Let's Make Robots!

4th Annual Epilog Challenge on Instructables.

There are at least a couple of LMRians in the contest. See all entries at:

The prizes on this one are really nice, including a laser cutter for the grand prize. The contest is open to US and Canadian residents (except Quebec).

Post a comment below if you are in the contest and want some votes.

NiZn 1.6V rechargeable batteries

I was at a gem and mineral show today and ran across a rechargeable battery technology I had never heard of before. The NiZn 1.6V batteries are fairly new, though they've been around longer than I would have suspected.

At 1.6V these AA and AA batteries are a lot closer to the voltage of the equivalent 1.5V alkaline. The vendor whose table I saw them at uses them for his UV light (used for examining fluorecing minerals). These lights won't run with 1.2V NiCad or NiMh, but they work just fine with the 1.6V NiZn batteries.

Would an LMR Marketplace work?

This past weekend I thought a lot about a separate entity that would run the commercial side of LMR. Very like how Adafruit.com represents a company, and Ladyada.com is a supporting community site.

I have an idea for an LMR Marketplace that I think would allow a commercial side to LMR, that stays true to the spirit of LMR.

LMR Member Discounts

Frits has negotiated discounts with a number of web shops. These discount deals are for LMR members only. Info on these deals is shown at the very bottom of the main page. I'm not going to list them here, as that is just duplication of effort.

However, a few shops have spontaneously started offering discounts for LMR members! You guys rock!

This post is my attempt to collect a list of them.

Telepresence Robot... by Saturday

Err. Does anyone have a telepresence robot they could lend to a good cause for a few days?

Oh, and it needs to get to NYC by Saturday. Yes, this Saturday.

No? Oh, well. Worth asking.

Heahter Knight, all around amazing human, robot expert and one of the key organizers of the first ever Robot Film Fest just sent out a tweet asking to borrow a telepresence robot for this Saturday at the fest.

Man I would love to go to that event. I would love even more to show up and help deliver something for the event.

OK, OK. Longshot.

No big deal about Campus Party this year?

Last year there were several LMR members who went to the European Campus Party. This year, I haven't heard a thing.

No plans?

MyKeepon coming soon

Is anyone else waiting with anticipation for the release of the MyKeepon toy from http://beatbots.net/project/mykeepon/ this fall?

I wonder how hackable it will be?

Where do you spend your robotics dollar (or Yen, Euro, Yuan, Pound, Franc...)

You may have noticed that Frits has negotiated some sweet discounts for LMR with a couple of robotics shops. Check the bottom of the main page.

Using an LMR discount code, ALABTU, you can get 5% off and an additional 5% is donated to LMR to pay for costs of running the site.

My question is, why just a couple of shops? Where do you spend your money? Let's get a list going of the shops where we spend the most, and see if we can negotiate some deals.

Ideas for a Children's Museum Exhibit

There's a very small children's museum near me, and I've talked to them about putting together a robot exhibit. They've shown some interest, so I'm going to put together some ideas. Here's where you come in...
