Today I was trying to help someone out with troubleshooting a circuit and I suggested the make a quick logic probe. I just had him use an LED with a series resistor connected to ground, and then probe around with the other end of the LED.
Matt Richardson of MAKE Magazine posted this video on how to flash an 8-pin micro with Arduino code. It is based on work done by the MIT High-Low Tech lab.
If you like using the Picaxe 08m for small project, but would prefer to stay Arduino compatible, this may be a good approach for you.
